Shawgust: Black Magic 2 (1976) w/ Ian Jane

Shawgust: Black Magic 2 (1976) w/ Ian Jane

August 11, 2021

It's time for Shawgust where we celebrate horror movies from Shaw Brothers Studios all month long! We're kicking it off here with Black Magic 2, a sequel in name only to Black Magic (1975), and we're joined by special guest Ian Jane from Rock! Shock! Pop! to discuss all the wackiness. Spells and counter-spells, voodoo dolls, pubic hair, breast milk, maggots, zombies, all with a dash of Hammer horror and James Bond.

Episode correction: Calamity of Snakes, not Killer Snakes, is being released by Unearthed Films.

Check out Ian's website: www.rockshockpop.com and follow him on Twitter @rockshockpop or Instagram @ianjane75. Ian's commentary is on the Blu-ray release from 88 Films (REGION B LOCKED). You can purchase it here, along with many other Shaw Brothers horror movies: https://88-films.myshopify.com/collections/88-asia-collection

The Spider Labyrinth (1988)

The Spider Labyrinth (1988)

July 14, 2021

We once again find ourselves the fertile ground that is late 80s Italian horror with The Spider Labyrinth. Secret cults, a stranger in a strange land, creepy kids, stop-motion animation, and of course, SPIDERS.

We also have an update about the director of The Passing, John Huckert, who messaged us with some more information about his movies and the hauntings Lance discussed in that episode.

Fulci’s Beatrice Cenci (1969) with Troy Howarth

Fulci’s Beatrice Cenci (1969) with Troy Howarth

June 9, 2021

We're celebrating the birthday of one of our favorite directors, Lucio Fulci, with one of his unsung films: Beatrice Cenci. While not a horror film, this is one of the films of which Fulci himself was most proud and still has enough Fulci "flourishes" for fans of his horror movies to enjoy it. To help us with our discussion, our guest for this episode is author and film historian Troy Howarth, who provided the commentary for the 88 Films blu-ray release of Beatrice Cenci.

Troy’s books are available on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/s?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3ATroy+Howarth&s=relevancerank&text=Troy+Howarth&ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1

and you can hear his film commentaries on numerous releases from Severin, Arrow, Blue Underground, Cauldron Films, and many other labels.

Night of the Scarecrow (1995)

Night of the Scarecrow (1995)

May 26, 2021

This week Lance picked a 90s horror movie that Erica actually liked! From a director whose filmography is mostly horror sequels, Jeff Burr, comes a movie about a warlock spirit inhabiting a scarecrow to kill his enemies. Plus practical effects and an orgy. What's not to love? (well, a few 90s horror cliches, but that's ok).
